  byebye daisy

And so today, we sold Daisy the beetle.

I still remember her maiden journey home, gleaming green with a little white flower placed coquettishly in her mini-vase and how she was quite bubbling over with LIFE. She was so adorable. We loved her panache -- dishy curves, charming "eyelashes", "miniskirt", star-rimmed wheels ... and best of all, that cheery, inimitable shade of limegreen that screams HUG ME EAT ME HUG ME SOME MORE!! She was such a bear :] I loved her best and it's awful having her go away. Dad said he had to do it before prices totally devalued so he did. I knew I'd miss her, but I didn't realise how much. You see it all happened so quickly, in a matter of days in fact, that grief hadn't time to register. And tonight, as I looked out my window and saw her no more, it sank in and now I feel perfectly wretched. She wasn't just any old car, or any old beetlebug either. It's easy to say 'oh I'll just get one myself when I finally get my hands on a driver's licence; and some MOOlah' but it just won't be the same. She was the original.

  phwweeee

my lungs exclaim in protest each time I suck in air. I can barely breathe -- clogged nose (both nostrils at once, which hardly happens; you know, I think there's some sort of genetic insurance inbuilt within DNA that actually prevents this self-annihilating symptom, so it's a really BAD sign that my system's totally outta whack), sore throat, phlegmy cough, blocked ears and other associated ENT woes. Latest count: 5-and-a-half toilet rolls. Wish I'd just catch pneumonia and die -- it NEVER rains when you want it to. To quote, "I'm sure the PE teachers have a pact with God."

  don't ask me why

Flashback first week Jan: "I am SO going to Columbia University."

I used the postbacc-premed program they had over at Columbia as an excuse for wanting to go there. But honestly, I don't exactly have a REAL reason for wanting Columbia so badly. I know it sounds stupid and baseless and completely frivolous, but it's just a gut thing -- Columbia's the one for me. I just KNOW it. Earlier on, I was afraid to type that out or write it down where everybody can see it, because somehow it makes everything seem so ... impossible. And they'll start asking: 'Why Columbia? Is it even Ivy League? Where's it at? What're you gonna do there? What about UK?'

Well, don't ask me why, yes it's Ivy League, it's in New York, I have absolutely no idea, and UK's not really my kinda place.

And even if it does seem impossible, at least I've got something to work at. And maybe, just maybe, I might actually get there.

  the nightmarket

After the Jay concert, Esther, Shoo and I chanced upon a nightmarket just outside the indoor stadium. It was really pretty, comprising row upon row of white marquees, each lit up beautifully along the waterfront. They sold all sorts of knick knacks and other little things you probably have no use for, but it's a great place to pick up an ice-cream or some iced tea and have a leisurely latenight stroll, especially with the wonderfully cool weather we've been having of late :]
  zhou jie lun!

Heehee :] Was reduced to a shrieking lian yesterday at the Jay concert; man he's HOT!! Shoo and I were going gaga esp when he sang a cover of Faye Wong's woyuanyiweini (for you, I'm willing) and the shijiemori song (which I'd never heard before -- apparently it's a concert special), while Esther, ultimate Jay-fan and cheenaphile :P, ironically remained unfazed (perhaps she was just too busy drooling to shriek :]). He's totally gifted -- he writes all his own songs and practically all the songs he writes are great, he plays innumerable instruments, and his vocal timbre never faltered the whole two hours. In addition to ALL that, the guy has a gorgeous jaw which the cameramen certainly knew how to show to full advantage :P~ And the moments when he broke into one of his rare grins ... aack I'd better not go on anymore :[ I'll only regret not going a second time tonight, and start bemoaning the fact that it'll be at least a year before he comes back.

  the perfect break-up song

I love this song. It's got such a happy jazzy ring to it, and is exactly how one ought to feel after a break-up :] I don't believe in extended periods of grief-wallowing or self-loathing or other useless, cumbersome feelings -- no point really, when there're so many other things to worry about.

They're writing songs of love, but not for me
A lucky star's above, but not for me
With love to lead the way,
I've found more clouds of gray
Than any Russian play could guarantee.

I was a fool to fall and get that way
Hi ho, alas and also Lack-a-day!
Although I can't dismiss
The mem'ry of his kiss,
I guess he's not for me.

It all began so well, but what an end!
This is the time a feller needs a friend;
When every happy plot ends with a marriage knot,
And there's no knot for me.

  the princess diaries

Aack help! I'm hooked on the princess diaries!! But the thing is, despite feeling like a 12 year-old, I think it's totally fun :] So dumb it's laughable, it's the perfect respite from mammal histology and dc circuits and integration and halogenoalkanes and S-C-H-O-O-L. She's a nice, idealistic kind of stupid, rather different from the irritating sort. I think I'm into one of my regressive phases again. My brain refuses to start.

  booby trap

Looking at the musicmatch 'guess the celeb boob' pop-up made me remember the Cosmopolitan article I read a few weeks ago -- a total eye-opener :] They lined these busty women up in a prison-mugshot type row and took photos of their bare chests. You see, some had boob jobs and some had the genuwine stuff. So you were supposed to look at them and decided which for yourself whether they were genuwine or not. I got 3 out of 10 right. Which goes to show, boob jobs ARE worth going for :]

Oh and ya ain't gonna find that mag in stores -- it's a back issue. Sorry boys :P
  4am blues

I've not been sleeping well since mom and dad left for Melbourne. I think I just miss them. And miss them even more when they call to say goodnight. Last December's holiday was more precious than any other in recent times, compounded by the fact that it'll be a long and difficult year before the next one comes along. I think the holidays made me realise how closely knit my family is. I love waking up in the morning knowing that mom's around to go with me someplace or to just have lunch with me. We'll bitch over lunch about some crabby bit o' entertainment gossip before venturing into more serious topics like the benefits of underwire support vs inflatable enhancements (for her :P). And in the evenings, dad'll come home early from work and take us all out for dinner and movies and supper. That's how day by day went by, in pleasurable ease and predictability. This year they left for a wedding, leaving us to ourselves the first couple of schooldays. I missed dad's first-day-of-school pep talk, the first-day-of-school breakfast where the whole family sits down and says farewell to the holidays and hello to the start of a grubby school year, the goodbye kiss and bottomsmack and break-a-legs. Somehow, school doesn't seem to have started yet. Not without mom and dad's blessings; not without the twelve-year tradition. They'll be back 2am Monday. I can't wait :]

Its not the pale moon that excites me
That thrills and delights me, oh no
Its just the nearness of you

It isn't your sweet conversation
That brings this sensation, oh no
Its just the nearness of you

When you're in my arms and I feel you so close to me
All my wildest dreams came true

I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me the right
To hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night... the nearness of you

  happy new year

Right. We're back in school! Jos and I are holing up in the comlabs to avoid unsavoury characters in the canteen and the general Noise thanks to bloody orientation. Urrgh it's an awful awful start to the year. Dozed off during epithelial lec -- Very Bad Omen. Off to chem tutorial.

Oh and it's still Jan 1 on the blog because I didn't adjust the time settings.
